The county is named after six-term Tennessee Governor William Carroll (1788-1844).[1]

The original Carroll County Tax Books 1848-1850, 1871, 1902 are held at the County Courthouse. In 1976, the Tennessee State Library and Archives microfilmed these records. A copy of their film is also available at the Family History Library: FHL US/CAN Film 1008616.

Marriage

Marriages were not officially recorded in Carroll County until 1838, when a law was passed mandating the practice.[3] The following publication, based on early newspapers, helps to alleviate this genealogical obstacle:
