Description
Sumner County was named for American Revolutionary War hero General Jethro Sumner. The county is located in the north-central area of the state.[2]

Additional Information
Middle Tennessee county established in 1786. Sumner County belonged to the pioneer Cumberland Settlements.[7]
The county is named after Jethro Sumner (1733-1785), an American colonist who defended North Carolina against the British in 1780.[8]

Records early Latter-day Saint families kept in Utah may contain information about their cousins who were not members of the Church that stayed put in Tennessee. Early Latter-day Saints with Sumner County roots include:
- Henry and Rachel (Stillwell) Thomas. Henry died in Far West, Missouri in 1837.[10]
- Daniel Stillwell Thomas and his wife Martha Paine (Jones) Thomas who migrated to Utah in 1849.[11]
- John and Elizabeth (Bell) Bennett. John died in Iowa; his widow settled in Orem, Utah.[12]
