Description

Sullivan County was named for John Sullivan, a general in the Revolutionary War. The county is located in the northeastern area of the state.[2]

History Timeline

In the 1780s, this county's land fell within the bounds of the State of Franklin
  • 1779 - Created by the North Carolina legislature from part of Washington County.
  • 1784 - Sullivan joined two neighboring counties in declaring their independence from North Carolina.
  • 1785 - These counties applied for admission to the United States as the State of Franklin.
  • 1786 - In March 1786 the Franklin legislature created Spencer County from the western part of Sullivan County. Meanwhile, North Carolina created a duplicate of Spencer County but named it Hawkins County.
  • 1789 - Hopes for Franklin statehood faded. North Carolina refused to recognize Franklin's counties, so it is the Hawkins name that remains in use today.
  • 1796 - All the land in these counties became part of the new State of Tennessee.


Additional Information
East Tennessee county established in 1779. Originally part of the North Holston Settlement, from 1784 to 1788, this land was claimed by the abortive, short-lived State of Franklin.[8]

The county is named after Revolutionary War General and New Hampshire Governor John Sullivan (1740-1795).[9]
