Description
Meigs County was named for Colonel Return J. Meigs, who operated a federal Indian agency across the river in Rhea County until 1817. The county is located in the southeastern area of the state.[2]

The county is named after Revolutionary War hero and Indian Agent Return Jonathan Meigs (1740-1823).[8]
