Introduction

About 400,000 to 460,000 New York served in the Union Army.  This was over 20% of all the men in the state and over 50% of men under the age of 30. More than 130,000 were foreign-born, including about 20,000 from Canada, 51,000 from Ireland, and 37,000 from Germany. [1]

New York eventually provided 27 cavalry regiments, 15 artillery regiments, 8 regiments of engineers, and 248 infantry regiments. 4,125 free blacks from New York served in the Union Army  Three full regiments of United States Colored Troops were raised and organized in New York-- 20th, 26th, and 31st USCT.[1]

  • 1st Regiment, New York Mounted Rifles
    Mustered in July 30, 1861 at Fortress Monroe, Virginia.
    Mustered out July 21, 1865, by consolidation with 3rd Now York Cavalry to form 4th Provisional Cavalry.
  • 1st Regiment, New York State Militia
    The Legislature by act approved April 16,1861, authorized the organization of 38 regiment of volunteer militia for a service of 2 years. They were eventually all accepted by the U.S&gt after April 1862 the designation was changed to "National Guard"; government.
  • 5th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery
    Organized by consolidation of Jackson Heavy as Companies "E," "F," "G" and "H" and 2nd Jackson Heavy as Companies "A," "B," "C" and "D" March 6, 1862. 6th Battalion Heavy Artillery (3rd Battalion Black River Heavy Artillery) assigned as Companies "I," "K," "L" and "M" December 31, 1862.
    Mustered out July 19, 1865.
  • 5th Regiment, New York Cavalry
    Regiment recruited at New York City as Ira Harris Cavalry. Designated Ira Harris Guard October 16, 1861, and 5th New York Cavalry November 14, 1861.
