History

Madawaska County was created from Victoria County in 1873. Before that it was part of York and then Carleton Counties. Madawaska County is located in the northwestern corner of New Brunswick. The Parish of Madawaska was created in 1833 as part of Carleton County. Saint-Léonard and Saint-Basile were established in 1850. Saint-François, Saint-Jacques and Saint-Hilaire were all established from the Parish of Madawaska in 1877. Sainte-Anne was created in 1877 from parts of Saint-Léonard and Saint-Basile. Clair was erected from a portion of the Saint-François in 1900. The parishes of Saint-André, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Rivière-Verte, Saint-Joseph, Baker Brook, and Lac Baker were created later in the twentieth century.
