Parish History

DEAL (St. Leonard), a sea-port, market-town, and parish, and a member of the town and port of Sandwich, in the union of Eastry, hundred of Cornilo, lathe of St. Augustine, E division of Kent, on the coast of which it is situated, between the North and South Forelands, and near the great shipping roadstead, called the Downs, 18 miles ESE from Canterbury, and 72 E by S from London. A chapel, in Lower Deal, dedicated to St. George the Martyr, and in the Grecian style, was built at an expense of £1991. There are places of worship for Baptists, Independents, Wesleyans and Unitarians.

"Deal has its origins in a small fisherman's village some distance from the village of what is now Upper Deal, but gained in importance in the C17 when the harbour at Sandwich silted up. There was an important naval anchorage just off the coast. The town was incorporated in 1699 and grew rapidly in the late C17 and early C18. St George's began as a chapel of ease to St Leonard's in Upper Deal and was funded by subscription"
