Parish History

HALLING (St. John the Baptist), a parish, in the union of North Aylesford, hundred of Shamwell, lathe of Aylesford, W division of Kent, 4¾ miles SW from Rochester.^[1]

"Halling is, ecclesiastically, in the diocese of Rochester, in the archdeaconry of Rochester. The church is named St. John Baptist with registers commencing 1705.

Halling, is two hamlets and a parish in North Aylesford district, Kent. The hamlets are Lower Halling and Upper Halling. Lower Halling lies on the river Medway, and on the Stroud and Maidstone railway, between Cuxton and Snodland stations, 4-1/4 miles southwest by south of Rochester;; and has a post office under Rochester. Upper Halling is ½ a mile to the west-north-west.^[2]

"The village, which is small, has extensive manufactories of Portland and Roman cement, and also kilns for lime burning. The lime used in building Waterloo and Now London bridges was brought from Halling. There is a great portion of moorland. The river Medway runs through the parish, and a ridge of hills intersects it."^[3]
