The Domesday survey of Oistreham refers to the town and civil parish on the River Darent.
The church of St Mary is 14th century and in the registers the baptism of General James Wolfe (born in the Old Vicarage) is found along with those of three grandchildren of Sir Winston Churchill, who lived at Chartwell in the parish.
