Parish History
SHOREHAM (St. Peter and St. Paul), a parish, in the union of Seven-Oaks, hundred of Codsheath, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, W division of Kent, 4½ miles N from Seven-Oaks. [1]
Shoreham is a village and civil parish in the Darent valley and Sevenoaks district of Kent. Shoreham Wikipedia
Shoreham St Peter and St Paul is an extensive Ancient Parish in Kent and includes Badgers Mount and Well Hill; a map of the parish boundary may be found A church near you.
The large white Memorial cross opposite the church on the sloping hillside was dug in 1920 to commemorate local men lost in World War I.
One local Private Thomas Highgate was granted a posthumous pardon in 2006 after becoming the first British soldier shot for desertion at the battle of Mons on 8 September 1914. He had been undefended at his court martial due to the loss of his regimental colleagues through injury, death or capture and evidence of desertion was found to be insufficient to warrant the punishment.
The church is mediaeval in origin, the graveyard includes Commonwealth War graves.
