Parish History[edit | edit source]
CRAY, FOOT'S (All Saints), a parish, in the union of Bromley, hundred of Ruxley, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, W division of Kent, 12½ miles SE from London. [1]
Domesday Book recorded the landowner as Godwin Fot, who possessed a farm, four cottages and a mill – and gave his name to the manor. Conveniently located where the Maidstone Road crossed the River Cray, the village (which was also spelt Footscray, and sometimes still is) grew steadily over the following centuries.[2]
Foots Cray All Saints is an Ancient Parish.
This parish is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Rochester and deanry of Dartford. The church stands at the back of the village on the north side, close to the corner of Foot's Cray park. It is a small mean building, consisting of two isles and a chancel, having a low spire steeple at the west end, and is seemingly of high antiquity. It is dedicated to All Saints. [3]
