Parish History[edit | edit source]

CUDHAM (St. Peter and St. Paul), a parish, in the union of Bromley, hundred of Ruxley, lathe of Sutton-at-Hone, W division of Kent, 7 miles SE by S from Bromley. [1]

Cudham, a village and a parish in Bromley district, Kent. It is an extensive but thinly inhabited parish, nearly seven miles in length. The village stands near the boundary with Surrey, 3 miles southwest of Chelsfield rail station, and 7 miles south-south-east of Bromley and was once a market town. The manor belonged anciently to the Apperfields. The Church dates from the 12th century and is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, is an old building of flint and brick in the Perpendicular style, with a steeple rising from the middle with 9 bells, the oldest dating from 1490.[2]
The modern parish is part of a united benefice with Downe, Kent in the Diocese of Rochester.

The parish workhouse was situated at Leaves Green.

From this parish was formed the parish of Biggin Hill in the twentieth century development along the Westerham- Bromley Road. Biggin Hill was developed to the north of Aperfield in the twentieth century. [3]

Poor Law Unions[edit | edit source]

  • Bromley Poor Law Union The parish workhouse prior to the opening of the Union Workhouse at Locksbottom in 1844 was situated at Leaves Green.

The Cudham Parish Workhouse was built in 1731 at Leaves Green.[4]
