Dover, Kent Poor Law Union

History

Dover Poor Law Union was the name adopted on 12 May 1837, replacing the name River Poor Law Union which had been adopted when that Union was formed in 1835.

There had been prior to this two earlier Unions:

The Gilbert Union workhouse in River which had begun as a parish workhouse River, Kent and developed in the 1790's to include Alkham, Kent Buckland near Dover, Kent Capel, Kent Charlton by Dover, Kent Dover St James the Apostle, Kent Temple Ewell, Kent Eythorne, Kent Folkstone Hougham, Kent Ringwould, Kent River, Kent Walmer, Kent and Whitfield, Kent

The Gilbert Union workhouse in East Langdon which developed in the 1790's to include East Langdon , Kent St Margaret at Cliffe, Kent Oxney, Kent Guston, Kent Great Mongeham, Kent Little Mongeham, Kent Ripple, Kent Sutton by Dover, Kent and West Cliffe, Kent
