Description[edit | edit source]

The purpose of this task is to verify the already-posted neighboring counties for each county. The list of neighboring counties is found under the Historical Facts heading and the county heading box.

1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose a county to verify.

2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task.  Sign up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart below.

3. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart to go to the FamilySearchWiki county page

4. Scroll to the heading Historical Facts. Click on the check box to the right; this opens the window where editing can be done (what you see typed here is in “rich text”)

5. Scroll to the section Neighboring Counties within Historical Facts.

6. Open a new Internet browser page.

7. On the new browser page, go to Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/

a. Click on the word English above the image of the world.
b. Find the search box in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
c. In the search box, type: (your county name) County Ohio
d. Click on the highlighted county name which drops; now you are on the Wikipedia county page.
e. Under "Geography" find the heading "adjacent counties"

8. Compare the Wikipedia county page with the FamilySearch county page.

     a.    Add to FamilySearch Wiki the counties, and the correct geographical information (i.e. north, south, etc.), listed on Wikipedia that do not already appear there.

     b.   Remove from FamilySearch Wiki those counties, and/or the geographical information, that is not listed on Wikipedia


  • Accept Wikipedia as correct, if you find a mistake on FamilySearch Wiki.
  • If changes are needed, you may make those changes by editing in rich text or wikitext. 
  • If you are new to the wiki, rich text may be easier for you to use.
  • If you have questions about editing either of these text forms, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.
  • You only need to edit in one style of text.

9. If no changes are needed, you have completed your task.

10. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.


Rich Text editing instructions[edit | edit source]

a. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password.
b. Open the county page for editing by clicking on the button "Edit this page" near the upper right-hand corner of the page, opposite the county page title.
c. Scroll to the section Neighboring Counties.
d. You will see an icon TemplateSymbolInRichEditor.png. This is a template symbol to separate the county names. Leave it in place between the counties. If you mistakenly remove this symbol between the county names do as follows while still in rich text editor:
1. Place your cursor where you want to replace the template symbol.
2. Go to the toolbar at the top of the page.
3. Click on the icon {T}. The icon will highlight blue and open an edit box.
4. Copy and paste {{·}} in the edit box.
5. Click OK.
e. If county names need to be changed:
1. Edit as you would in any word processing program.
2. Delete the incorrect county name by placing your cursor at the end of the word which needs editing. Backspace to remove any incorrect words or letters.
3. Type in the correct name.
4. Highlight the county name you just typed.
5. Go to the toolbar at the top of the page.
6. Select the World icon with the link.
7. Type your county name below the work link in this format,"[Your County Name] County, Ohio".
- Capitalize the beginning of each word and place the comma as shown.
- An automatic search result will appear in the box below.
- Choose the result which exactly matches [Your county name] County, Ohio by clicking on it. This will link the county you typed to its page in the FamilySearch Wiki.
- Click OK.
f. If geographic information needs to be changed:
1. Edit as you would in any word processing program.
2. Place your cursor at the end of the word which needs editing.
3. Backspace to remove any incorrect words or letters.
4. Type in the correct words, adding parenthesis around the geographic description.
g. Find the yellow icon <R> in the text of the page. 
1. Click on the icon. This will highlight it blue.
2. Go to the toolbar near the top of the page. Click on the first blue <R>.
3. This will open a box to edit the Wikipedia reference.
4. Change the date which you accessed the Wikipedia information. (accessed 10 May 2012) to your date.
5. Click OK.
h. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Edited neighboring counties information".
i. Click on the box "Save Page".
j. Your task is complete.
k. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.


Wikitext editing instructions[edit | edit source]

a. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password.
b. Open the county page for editing by clicking on the button "Edit this page" near the upper right-hand corner of the page, opposite the county page title.
c. Click on the word 'Wikitext' in the top left corner of the toolbar.
d. Scroll to the section *'''Neighboring Counties''' .
e. Each county name is linked to the correct county wiki page by the wikitext as follows: [[(county name) County, Ohio|(county name)]]. When linked correctly, after the page is saved, the county name will be blue. This link takes the reader directly to the named county page.
f. Make any changes to the geographic description as needed.
g. The {{·}} after the geographical information for each county is called a template. You only see this template when editing in wikitext. It is a dot to separate the counties.
h. The Wikipedia reference looks as follows.
<ref>Wikipedia contributors, "(County Name) County, Ohio" in Wikipedia: the Free Encyclopedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(County name)_County,_Ohio (accessed '''add date''').</ref>
Replace "add date" with the date you accessed Wikipedia.
i. Add a summary sentence near the bottom of the page in the Summary box saying something like, "Edited neighboring counties information".
j. Click on the box "Save Page".
k. Your task is complete.
l. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.

Assignment Chart[edit | edit source]

If you are accepting this task: 

1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your county of choice. 
4. Type 4 tildes (~). This symbol is located on the upper left-hand part of your keyboard, next to the number 1. The ~~~~ is an electronic signature and will leave your user name and date when you signed.
5. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Selected Adams County for Verification".
6. Click on the box "Save Page".
7. You are now signed up to complete this task.

If you are completing this task:

  • Follow the same instructions as accepting the task, except place your cursor in the correct county box under the heading Date Completed. Change your summary sentence to something like, "Completed Adams County for neighboring counties verification."
