Areas of Romania had mandatory military service requirements during most of the 19th century. Records (registre militare) were kept on those males who were eligible for this service, similar to the draft registration records in the United States during the 20th century. They were kept from 1822 to 1873. These records can be used to determine residence and vital data for the registrant, especially in cases where church and other civil records are incomplete or not available.
Coverage: 30-40% of the population can be found in military eligibles records.
Content: Names of registrants, birth dates and places, certificates of baptism and marriage, names of parents, and residences can be listed on these records.
Accessing the Records: Regional Archives hold military eligibles records. Archives do not do research, so a researcher must be hired. The FamilySearch Library does not have any military records.[1]
