Court Records
These records can be used primarily for family relationships and to extend lineage beyond other existing records. Records cover disputes regarding certain legal matters and exist from about 1580.
Numerous courts were established to deal with general and specific types of cases. Specific courts dealing with family inheritance, land tenure, property, tax obligation, foreigner cases, financial obligations, government service workers, military conscription, medical cases are the most valuable genealogically. Information contained varies, but may include names, residence, family relationships, names of heirs and sometimes several generations of ancestors; dates.
Records can be found at the National Archives, municipal archives, British Library in London. About ten percent of the population may be be found in the records.
