Civil Service and Examination Records
These records are valuable as a finding tool and supplement to civil registration where early records are lacking. These records include service and vital data of government employees and officials. Civil and military examination records document all those who took the examinations, and additional records for those who successfully took them. Records generally begin in the mid-1700s and exist to the present.
These records may include documents verifying birth, marriage and death dates and places of civil service workers and their relatives, and names of those who took literary, military, or city examinations. Records can be found at the National Archives, municipal archives, British Library in London. These records probably cover less than five percent of the population.
