Research use: Valuable as a finding tool and supplement to civil registration where early records are lacking.
Record type: Service and vital data of government employees and officials. Civil and military examination records document all those who took the examinations, and additional records for those who successfully took them.
Time Period: 1750- present.
Content: Documents verifying birth, marriage and death dates and places of civil service workers and their relatives, and names of those who took literary, military, or city examinations.
Location: National Archives, municipal archives, British Library in London.
Population coverage: 5%.
