Census records[edit | edit source]

Information from these records can be used to compile family groups. Identifies parents, children and spouses and dates and places of vital events. Other relatives are often listed nearby. The first British colonial census was a partial listing done in 1853. After 1871 censuses were taken every ten years until 1941. Censuses since independence have been taken in 1973 and 1983.

The 1871 and later censuses identify each person by name, sex and age. The 1881 and later censuses additionally identify the birthplace of each individual, and show relationships to the head of the household. Records can be found at the National Archives, municipal archives, British Library in London. Before 1881 about 20% of the population is included; after 1881, 60%.
