County Information
Description
Logan County (originally named Sarber) was created on 22 Mar 1871[2] and was named for James Logan (1792-1859), a Kentucky-born early settler in the area who had served in the territorial legislature, from Crawford County, and the first state legislature, from Scott County (part of the latter was absorbed into Logan County). Its county seats are Booneville and Paris.[3] It is located in the west-central area of the state.[4]

History Timeline
Emphasis for this timeline is on events that affected migration, records, or record-keeping. Unless otherwise mentioned, the events below were taken from the Arkansas County page on the website, The Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture. [9]
- 1800s (early) - A series of treaties with different tribes gradually removed their claim to the land, opening western Arkansas for white settlement.
- 1830-1860 - settlers from states east of the Mississippi River poured into western Arkansas, establishing small farms and communities.
- 1861-1865 - The population of Logan /County suffered tremendous hardships, and families who could afford it moved to other states for the duration of the war.
- 1871 March 22 - An act was passed on March 22, 187l, creating “a county called Sarber.”
- 1875 December 14 -The name was changed to Logan County, with Paris named as the official county seat.
- 1930s - Hard times fell on the county in the Depression years of the 1930s. A decline in farm prices and a series of drought years devastated the farm economy. Unemployment became a major problem, and many families moved out of state to seek work
