List of Churches and Church Parishes
Copies and/or indexes of some early church records are in the B. Joan Keefer Genealogy and Local History Center at the Library Website.
Society of Friends (Quakers) - One of the earliest "settlements" in the county was a short-lived agricultural school called Dennis' Station on the Wabash River near the county line with Wabash County. It existed for only a year or two beginning in 1804 and was approved by Chief Little Turtle.[7] An 1853 map shows a Friends church as close as Wabash County.[8] But, several county histories say that a wood church was constructed in Dallas Township in 1841 (or 1844/1853, depending on the source) and donated to the Society by John Moore.[9] This church came to be known as the Maple Grove Church and is shown in the same 1879 map on page 66 at the intersection of sections 2 and 11 next to a school on the land of J. Plummer. It disbanded sometime in the 1930s, possibly consolidating with the Lincolnville Meeting (Wabash County) with which it alternated meeting locations[10], or perhaps the New Holland Meeting which was a little closer in Wabash County and operated from 1894 until 1964. Later two meeting houses were established in Jefferson Township: one at Pleasant Plain (1873-1904)[11] and one at Milo (1889-1917).[12] Records for the Jefferson Township Meetings for the period of 1899-1915 are at the Indiana Historical Society.[13] Records for the Maple Grove Meeting have not been located.

Probate Records[edit | edit source]

Tax Records[edit | edit source]
Indiana tax records complement land records and can be used in place of censuses or to supplement the years between censuses. Because only persons who owned taxable property were listed, many residents were not included in tax lists. There may also be gaps of several years in the tax records of some counties. For more information see the wiki page Indiana Taxation.
Vital Records[edit | edit source]
Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Indiana law in 1882 required registration of births and deaths in counties. The Indiana Department of Health has birth records filed after October 1907 and death records filed after January 1900 for deaths. Copies may be obtained from the county health department or the Indiana State Division of Vital Records.

Divorce[edit | edit source]
Prior to 1852 divorces in Indiana could be issued either in a court or as a special act by the General Assembly. After 1852 only a court could issue a divorce. While any county court could issue a divorce, they are most frequently issued by the Circuit Court. And, since 1859 at least one of the divorcing parties needs to be a resident of the court where the divorce is filed.[14] See also the FamilySearch Wiki article on Indiana Divorce.
To date, except for the statewide index of divorces issued by the General Assembly, Huntington County divorces have not been indexed. A few may be found by searching online newspapers for the county.
