Cape Coast was the first capital town of Ghana. It was the seat of the British colonial government in the then Gold Coast until it was moved to Accra in 1877. Much of the pre 1877 national records, including Probate records, land records, vital records and census records with other genealogical records are held in repositories in present Cape Coast.
