Census records[edit | edit source]
Record type: Population enumerations.
Time period: 1872 to present.
Contents: Individual names, relationships, number of households for each city, town or village, unmarried mature males, widows who were heads of households, land and property owners.
Location: National Archives, Accra; some are also in the National Archives in London.
Population coverage: Estimate 65% of British population and 35% of native population.
Reliability: Generally good, some gaps.[1]

The population of Ghana since colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch, French and British has been as follows:

About 40% of the population are Akan. Other ethnic groups include Ashanti, Ewe, Fante, Ga and Gur.[1]
