Brief History

5th Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861, Its companies were from the counties of Barbour, Clarke, Lowndes, Talladega, Dallas, Sumter, Monroe, Greene, and Pickens. It surrendered with 4 officers and 53 men.

• Company H "Warrior Guards" - many men from Tuscaloosa County [The majority of this company organized into an artillery unit on 28 December 1861; the remaining 18 members united with Company I, 5th AL Infantry.]
• Company I [subsequently, Company D] - many men from Greene County
• Company K - many men from Lowndes County  [this company organized 27 April 62 by transfer of a portion of Co. "E", 6th AL Infantry plus addition of new recruits]
• Company K [subsequently, Company A]- many men from Barbour County
