WikiProject Indiana
Wiki Project Indiana Tasks - Family History Centers
Description[edit | edit source]
The purpose of this task is to find Family History Centers located in a county and to add contact information about the center.
This task is an intermediate task and requires some knowledge about or experience with writing in wikitext.

To Print:
- Go to the top right-hand corner of the page within the the white area.
- Locate the word Print or the icon of a printer. Click on the icon.
- Print.
Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. Check the Assignment Chart below to choose a county to edit.
2. Sign up on the Assignment Chart to accept the task. Sign-up instructions are posted with the Assignment Chart below.
Locating the Family History Center[edit | edit source]
3. For each county,
- a. Locate the county seat for your chosen county.
- b. Find the Family History Center closest to the county seat.
- c. Add the Family History Center information to the Repository section of the county FamilySearch wiki page.
- d. Add information to the county page by editing in wikitext. Read the general instructions then follow the wikitext link to continued task directions about using wikitext to edit this project.
4. To find the county seat zip code of your chosen county:
- a. Go to Wikipedia by clicking on this link.
- b. Click in the box under the world image (Has magnifying glass in the box).
- c. Type (Your county name) County, Indiana.
- d. Hit enter on your keyboard.
- f. Go to the county information box on the right-hand side of the screen.
- g. Within the county information box search for the word "Seat". This is the county seat. Click on the city name.
- h. On the Wikipedia city page, go to the city information box on the right-hand side of the screen.
- i. Within the city information box search for the city zip code. If there is more than one zip code, chose any of the the posted zip codes.
5. To find the Family History Center closest to your county seat:
- a. Go to FamilySearch Centers and type in the zip code for your county seat in the box which says "Postal Code".
- b. Hit enter on your keyboard.
- c. If more than one result is shown, click on your city name in the left-hand column.
- d. On the map which appears, your county seat is the orange flag with the white star in the center.
- e. Family History Centers in the area indicated by flags with blue trees in the center.
- f. If there are no blue trees zoom out on the map until you see some trees. Zoom out by clicking on the minus (-) sign in the upper right-hand corner of the web page.
- g. Determine the closest to, or main Family History Center for the county seat. Click on the blue tree to learn the name of the town where the Family History Center is located.
6. Add information to the county page by editing in wikitext. Read the general instructions then follow the wikitext link to continued task directions about using wikitext to edit this project.
- If you have questions about editing, go to wiki help links under the heading Description.
7. Mark the Assignment Chart below to indicate you have finished the task.
Wikitext Editing Instructions[edit | edit source]
1. Click on your chosen county name in the Assignment Chart. This will take you to your county page.
2. Login to the FamilySearch wiki using your FamilySearch login name and password. Find the sign-in area in the top right-hand corner of the page.
3. Scroll to the heading Repositories.
4. Scroll to the section Family History Centers within Repositories.
5. Open the Family History Center heading for editing by clicking on the check mark in square on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the heading title.
6. Click on the word wikitext with in toolbox at the top of the edit box.
7. If there already is Family History Center information under this section, please remove it.
Adding the Family History Center Template[edit | edit source]
8. While in wiki text, copy and paste the following template under the heading of Family History Centers:
- {{IN fhc}}
9. Add the link to the Family History Center you found when following the instructions Locating the Family History Center Do this as follows:
- a. Immediately after the template you pasted in step "8", hit enter on your keyboard to make a space.
- b. Type [[Lima Ohio Family History Center|Lima Ohio Family History Center]]. Replace Lima Ohio in both sections of the link with the name of the Family History Center you located previously.
- c. Put a period after the link you just created.
- d. Add the following sentence and link while still in wiki text:
- For additional nearby Family History Centers, search online in the [http://www.familysearch.org/locations FHC directory].
- e. Add a summary statement at the bottom on the page something like, "Added family history center for the county."
- f. Save the page.
Editing the Family History Center Page[edit | edit source]
10. Click on the link to the Family History Center you just added.
- a. The link is blue.
- b. The link says something like "Monroe, Indiana Family History Center".
- c. A new wiki page about the Family History Center should open.
11. If no information about the center is listed on the FHC wiki page, add ONLY the address and phone number on the FHC wiki page. (The FHC leaders are supposed to add the other information).
12. To add information to the FHC wiki page:
- a. Scroll to the heading Center Contacts and Hours.
- b. Click on the check mark in square on the right-hand side of the page, opposite the heading title.
- c. Click on the word wikitext with in toolbox at the top left-hand corner of the edit box.
- d. Return to the Family History Center location page you accessed in step 5 of the previous instructions.
- e. Copy the address and paste it into the Family History Center wiki page you are editing. Paste the address after the words Location and Map.
- f. Copy the phone number and paste it into the the Family History Center wiki page you are editing. Paste the number after the word Phone.
13. Add a summary sentence something like "Added FHC information" and Save the page. The task is complete.
Assignment Chart[edit | edit source]
If you are accepting this task:
- 1. Sign in to the wiki at the upper right-hand corner of this page. Use your FamilySearch account username and password.
- 2. Open the Assignment Chart for editing by clicking on the check mark in the box at the right opposite the Assignment Table heading.
- 3. Place your cursor in the box under the heading Name/Date Task Accepted and opposite your county of choice.
- 4. Type 4 tildes (~). This symbol is located on the upper left-hand part of your keyboard, next to the number 1. The ~~~~ is an electronic signature and will leave your user name and date when you signed.
- 5. Scroll nearly to the bottom of the page. Add a summary sentence in the Summary box saying something like, "Selected Adams County for adding Family History Center".
- 6. Click on the box "Save Page".
- 7. You are now signed up to complete this task.
If you are completing this task:
- Follow the same instructions as accepting the task, except place your cursor in the correct county box under the heading Date Completed. Change your summary sentence to something like, "Completed Adams County for societies."
- Also, report your finished task on the Ohio FamilySearch Completed Task Google Form. Follow the instructions on the Google form. This step is important for documenting completed wiki volunteer work. Thank you!
