Main Page of Utah Wiki Project

Task Description[edit | edit source]

Copy preset birth paragraphs and links to each of Utah's 20 counties for the years before civil birth records were recorded. Then adapt the paragraphs and links to the county.

It is expected that this task will take 10 - 30 minutes per county.

FYI: Using templates allows wording to be consistent from county to county. Changes can be made in one place and appear wherever those templates were posted.

Steps[edit | edit source]

Step 1. Prep[edit | edit source]

A. Sign in to the Wiki, open two pages

Having two pages open — one for this task page, the other for the county page — makes it easy to toggle between them.

  1. Right-click on Project page (colored section on the right)
  2. Select either "Open in new window" or "Open in new tab."

Once the county page is open (Step B), toggle between it and this task page using the mouse or Alt+Tab.

B. Sign up for a county

1. Go to the Sign up Chart and follow directions to sign up for a county.

2. Type the name of the county you selected in the edit Summary box and Save Page.

3. Click on the county name to go directly to the Birth heading.

4. Move any existing data down so you don't disturb it. You will evaluate it AFTER pasting and adapting the planned content.

Step 2. Put the planned info on the county page[edit | edit source]

B. Paste to the county page

Toggle to the county page. In edit mode (WikiText)

  • Place the cursor under the Birth heading
  • Paste (Ctrl+V) the cryptic stuff.
  • In the edit Summary, write "Copied planned birth info".
  • Save page

Step 3. Adapt the planned info to the county[edit | edit source]

A. Adapt dates to this county

1. Change the dates to match this county

  • There are 3 places to change (enclosed in parens) to a year or exact date, as requested. Please remove the parens too.

2. Change the x in x County, Utah to the name of the current county.

  • There are 6 places to make this change. Please DO NOT remove any brackets, as these are actually Wiki Codes.

3. Type in edit summary "Adapted dates, county name" and Save page 4. Test the links to be sure they all work

B. Review pre-existing content

Include/adapt/remove (as appropriate) what others had put in the Birth heading previously.

(Caution: stay in the "Birth" area, as it is very easy to get into the "Marriage" area.

  • Does their info pertain to 1898 or after?
    • Yes: leave it alone. Liz will be doing that portion
  • Does their info duplicate what we have?
    • Yes: remove theirs
    • No: Leave it alone, toggle back to this task page and write a comment in the "remarks" column for the county. (This allows their data to reviewed later without holding up the task)

Type in the edit Summary, "Adapted birth links to current county" and Save page

Step 4. Update the Sign Up chart[edit | edit source]

1. Next to the county in the sign up chart, put 4 tildes ~~~~ in the "Date completed" column.
2. Make any remarks (such as "Has content to be reviewed", or "The template wording should be changed to" ...and write your suggestion)
3. In the edit Summary write "completed ___ county" and 4. Save page

Step 5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for the next county[edit | edit source]

Sign up Chart[edit | edit source]

Volunteers are needed to check all 29 counties, adding items as appropriate. Please place four tildes (~~~~) in the "Volunteer" column next to the counties you choose for this task. This will automatically show your username and the date you signed up.

Please make a note in Remarks if you have any problems. This allows us to improve the task.
