    History Timeline[edit | edit source]

When the Uintah Reservation was created in 1861, it covered much of what we know today as Duchesne County. Following the Dawes Act, the reservation was opened to homesteaders, and the homesteading process began in 1905. In 1914, Wasatch County petitioned that the eastern part of the county become a separate county, and Duchesne County was officially organized in 1915. In 1917, some county boundaries were adjusted with Uintah County, but since then they have remained unchanged.[6]

    • 1822-1840 Duchesne City received its name from French Canadian trappers.
    • 1905 City of Myton established.
    • 1905 City of Roosevelt founded. Named after President Theodore Roosevelt.
    • 1905-1906 By an act of Congress, the unallotted land of the Ute Indian reservation was opened to homesteading. Throughout the fall and winter the settlers came to the Uinta Basin.
    • 1912 Census-designated place of Neola established.
    • 1914 November City of Duchesne made county seat.
    • 1915 January 4 Duchesne County was created from Wasatch County.
    • 1915 Duchesne County created. Named after river.
    • 1930s Town of Altamont settled as location of new area high school.
    • 1953 Altamont incorporated as a town in Duchesne County.
    • 1977 May 10 The boundaries were clarified without change on 10 May 1977.
