Collection Description[edit | edit source]

Located within the BYU Library, one of the top academic libraries in the United States. Located on Level 2, it is a premier family history center with access to FamilySearch digital images and microfilms, other premier FamilySearch and academic databases, and a large collection of family and local history books. The BYU Library is a partner with FamilySearch for scanning books, available on FamilySearch Digital Library. Patrons have access to many other relevant resources in the BYU Library beyond the Family History section, including print, manuscript, microfilm, cartographic, and electronic collections covering the breadth of academic studies, many of which relate to family and local history. The library also includes the Special Collections which archives many original and rare materials, including diaries, personal histories, letters, papers, photographs, and more.

Help with Family History

The BYU Library offers personal family history assistance and instruction through one-on-one help, classes, and other group instruction. Librarians, student reference staff, and family history missionary volunteers are willing to help you, including providing remote assistance, when needed. Online Learning

The library hosts webinars and other online classes and recorded family history instruction on a variety of related topics, from research, to websites and other tools. Visit the website for more information about classes and webinars.

Preserving Memories

The BYU Library offers an array of equipment for scanning and preserving photos and other memories. Scan photographs, slides, negatives, prints, documents, maps, microforms and more, at no charge. A large format printer for photos and charts or posters up to 24” x 56” is available with a nominal cost per print. Instruction and assistance is available for all equipment.
