Task Description

Add links to the FamilySearch Catalog for each topic of the 29 Utah counties.

This allows users to see whatever is available at the Family History Library under every topic for each Utah county, without having to update the Wiki when the Library acquired new items.

This also allows important items to be highlighted, rather than buried in endless lists of resources.

Step-by-step

Step 1: Preparation

A. Sign up

• Add your name to the sign up chart for the appropriate county, summarize your edit with the name of the county, and Save page
• Click to that county

B. Open the Family History Library Catalog for that county

• Open a new window (In Windows Explorer use Ctrl+N keys)
• At FamilySearch.org, select Catalog and do a Place-names search for the county. This will display the topics for that county

Note: Opening a new window (rather than a new tab) allows you to switch between the Catalog and the county Wiki page by using the Alt+Tab keys in Windows Explorer

Step 2: Copy and paste the FHLC paragraph

A. Copy the FHLC paragraph below

*The Family History Library Catalog lists some {{FHL|Utah, Beaver - Cemeteries|subject|disp=records of cemeteries}} in {{PAGENAME}}. (In the Catalog, click on the link to a title to see details.) Some of the books – and others – may be on [http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search Google Books], on [[Worldcat Online Catalog|WorldCat]], or available at public libraries.

Explanation of the FHLC paragrah: Most of the paragraph needs no changing. The area you will adapt to the county and topic is the part that starts with "{{FHL". All you have to do is: 1. Change the county name 2. Change the subject name to match the Catalog Be sure to leave the space-dash-space between the county and subject name) Be sure to leave the "pipe" after the subject name you changed (The pipe is above the backslash "\" on the keyboard) 3. Change the wording after "disp=" This is the "display" of what the user will see. In the above FHLC paragraph, for example, the user will see "lists some records of cemeteries in Beaver County, Utah" The county name is brought up automatically by the {{PAGENAME template.)

B. Paste the FHLC paragraph under the appropriate heading on the county page

• On the Wiki county page, navigate to the first topic that is listed in the Catalog
• Paste the FHLC paragraph using Wikitext.
  • Positioning: after other items listed under this heading

Step 3: Adapt the FHLC paragraph on the county page

Still in Wikitext,

• Be sure the county name is correct
• Change the subject to match the Catalog subject
• Change the "disp" (which means the words to "display"
  • Note: the PAGENAME template automatically displays the county name.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 to the end

• Go to the next subject for the county in the Catalog
  • Remember Alt+Tab to switch between them
• Repeat steps 2 and 3
• Summarize your edit "FHLC links to [subjects]"
• Save Page

Step 5: Update the sign up chart

• Add the date you finished the FHLC links for this county and enter "Done" in Remarks (unless you have other remarks to add)
• Give your edit summary "[county] finished" and Save page

Volunteers are needed to check all 29 counties, adding items as appropriate. Please place four tildes (~~~~) in the "Volunteer" column next to the counties you choose for this assignment. This will automatically give your username and the date you signed up.
