Brief History[edit | edit source]

17th Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in August, 1861, with men from Coosa, Lowndes, Montgomery, Pike, Randolph, Monroe, Butler, and Russell counties. The unit surrendered in April, 1865.[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Companies by County:

  • Company A (Bartow Avengers); - Captain E.P. Holcombe, many men from Lowndes County
  • Company B - Captain Jeptha J. Dean, many men from Butler County
  • Company C (Butler Rifles) - Captain Walter D Perryman, many men from Butler County
  • Company D - Captain Thomas Coke Bragg, many men fro Coosa County
  • Company E (Dowdelll Rangers) - Captain Wiley E White, many men fromRandolph County
  • Company F (Winter Greys) - Captain Andrew L. O'Brien, many men from Montgomery County
  • Company G - Captain Thomas Ragland, may men from Russell County
  • Company H - Captain W. W. McMillan, may men from Monroe County
  • Company I (Pike Rangers) - Captain A. M. Collins, many men from Pike County
  • Company K (Butler True Blues) - Captain Thomas J. Burnett, many men Butler County

The list of Companies with their counties, rosters and Captains is found in The Seventeenth Alabama Infantry - A Regimental History and Roster FHL book 976.1 M2ti
