The Ottoman Empire conquered Egypt in 1517, ending centuries of previous Mamluk rule and designating Egypt as an Ottoman eyalet, or province, until 1918. However, the Ottomans struggled to control Egypt and maintained mostly nominal control of the area. From 1798-1801, Napoleonic France invaded and conquered Egypt before being pushed out.
