Ottoman Empire (1517-1830)

The Ottoman Empire conquered Egypt in 1517, ending centuries of previous Mamluk rule and designating Egypt as an Ottoman eyalet, or province, until 1918. However, the Ottomans struggled to control Egypt and maintained mostly nominal control of the area. From 1798-1801, Napoleonic France invaded and conquered Egypt before being pushed out. Later, in 1805, Muhammad Ali Pasha seized control of Egypt and established a quasi-independent dynasty that lasted until 1882, when the British occupied the country. Even then, Egypt remained under de facto Ottoman control until 1914, when it was officially declared a British protectorate.[1]
