British Colonization (1787-1961)[edit | edit source]
British colonization began in 1787 following the Revolutionary War, when thousands of freed slaves arrived in Sierra Leone from England to form a settlement. In 1896, a British protectorate was established. After World War Two, the people of Sierra Leone began to increase their demands for freedom from British rule. In 1961, Sierra Leone became an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations, and in 1971 the Republic of Sierra Leone was declared.[1]
