The languages spoken on the Faroe Islands include:

  • Faroese
    • It is spoken in the entire area as a first language.
    • The numbers who speak Faroese are unclear since many ethnic Faroese live in Faroe Island and Denmark
    • Faroese is most similar to Icelandic and to their ancestor Old Norse, but is closer to Norwegian dialects of Western Norway
  • Danish
    • It is the second official language
    • Danish is taught in schools
    • It can be used by the government in public relations [1]
