Brief History[edit | edit source]
58th Infantry Regiment [also called 54th Regiment] was organized at Troy, Alabama, in March, 1863, with men from Pike, Barbour, Dale, Coffee, and Henry counties. Only a remnant surrendered in April, 1865.[1]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
Companies by County:
- Company A "Springville Volunteers" - many men from St. Clair County
- Company B - many men from Fayette County
- Company C - many men from Jefferson County and St. Clair County
- Company D - many men from Jefferson County
- Company E "Ben Edwards Grays" - many men from Butler County
- Company F - many men from Calhoun County
- Company G "St. Clair Grays" - many men from St. Clair County
- Company H - many men from Dallas County
- Company I "St. Clair Sharpshooters" - many men from St. Clair County
- Company K - many men from Autauga County and Montgomery County
