Task List[edit | edit source]

Part A - Create the Record Finder Page - England Counties[edit | edit source]

Step One - Sign Up[edit | edit source]

  • Go to the task list and sign your name for a state/county found on the task list.

Step Two - Create the Record Finder Page[edit | edit source]

  • The county pages have already been created for you. Use the link on the task list to go to the Wiki page.

  • The content from the England Record Finder has been added to the Wiki page for you to change the links to go to the county topic pages. You will be reviewing the page and replacing, "England" with the name of the county and other changes. Use these steps to assist you:

Step Three - Fix Breadcrumb[edit | edit source]

  • Add the wikitext listed below after the "|link1=" link in the breadcrumb on the Wiki page. Replace COUNTY with the county name.
COUNTY

  • In "link5", replace, England with the county name.

Step Four - Fix Heading and Sentence[edit | edit source]

  • Replace, England with the county name in the top heading of the page.

  • The following sentence is under the heading, List of Topics (just above the table). Replace England with the county name.

"This Record Finder table links to the England topic Wiki pages, containing databases and other information about accessing the records."

Step Five - Fix Links[edit | edit source]

  • We are going to link to county topic pages on this page. User Ctrl+F and type in England. This will assist you in locating all of the internal links that need to be changed.

  • Replace "England" with the name of the county. Note: If you double click the word England in a link, it will highlight the word and you can use Ctrl+V to paste in the name of the county. Make sure there is no extra space after the name of the county.

  • NOTE: There is only one link that you will leave as "England". That is listed below:

*Social Life and Customs (England)

Step Six - Fix the Category[edit | edit source]

  • At the bottom of the page, delete the "England Research Strategies" category and add the following wikitext.

  • Replace COUNTY with the name of the county.

  • Save the page and note the red links on the Wiki page.

Step Seven - Fix Red Links[edit | edit source]

  • From the list of red links on the page, change the link to an England topic article. For example, if the Bedfordshire Land and Property link is red because it does not exist, change the link to:
Land and Property (England)

  • Note: be sure to add, (England) to the text that displays so the user will know they are going to an England topic page instead of a county topic page.

  • If an England topic page does not exist, make a note on the task list and leave the link red.

  • Go through the whole page to fix the red links.

  • Go back to the task list and add the date it was finished and pick a new county.

Example[edit | edit source]

Part B - Fix County Sidebar[edit | edit source]

  • Now that the page has been created for a Record Finder, we need to change the link in the corresponding sidebar.

  • To do so, go to the county Record Finder page you just edited and click on, Edit source at the top of the page.

  • Go to the bottom of the page and under the Save Changes button, look for the "Templates used on this page."

  • It should list all the templates being utilized on the page (if you can see the list, click on the arrow beside "Templates used on this page.")

  • Find the county sidebar (example: Template:Bedfordshire-sidebar) in the list and click on, Edit. This will open up the Template sidebar in Edit mode.

  • At the top of the template, under the section, Beginning Research, change the 3rd bullet from Record Finder to the correct county. Use this as a guide:
    Record Finder

  • Save the page and click on the Record Finder link in the sidebar to make sure it goes to the county Record Finder page.
