• Syria was a French mandate from 1920 to 1946. The French language played an important role in administration during the mandate period, and some records from that time may be in French rather than Arabic.
• Until the end of World War I in 1918, Syria was a part of the Ottoman Empire. During this period the term "Syria" was often applied to the entire Levant, a region encompassing modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Jordan. Immigrants from the Levant during this period may be listed as Syrian in the records of their new countries, even if their homeland was not within the modern borders of Syria. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Ottoman Empire conducted detailed censuses of its population. FamilySearch provides access to some of these digitized records.
