Town Information

Description

Pittsford, Vermont at Wikipedia

On Oct. 12, 1761, New Hampshire Gov. Benning Wentworth granted a charter to a new town in the New Hampshire Grants to be known as Pitt's Ford, later changed to Pittsford. The first settlers arrived in 1769 and by 1775, about 200 people lived in the town.

Though Otter Creek offered navigable waters, other streams in Pittsford provided waterpower for mills and a major 19th-century industry - the production of iron. Along the appropriately named Furnace Brook, a blast furnace operated from 1791 to about 1882.

Though a region possessing a rich agricultural heritage in the Otter Creek valley, Pittsford can trace much of its history to one stone - marble. The first quarry opened in 1795 along the town's western ridges, but business boomed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Eventually, 11 quarries were in town. One, the Hollister Quarry, had a depth of 400 feet.

Since the 1980’s, farming has declined and forests are reclaiming pastures as Pittsford has become a bedroom community with 70% of the working population employed outside of the town.[1][2]
