British Colonization (1900-1960)[edit | edit source]
In 1882, Britain established both northern and southern protectorates in the area of present-day Nigeria. The two protectorates were combined in 1914, and the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established. From 1957-1959, the area became self-governing under a parliamentary system. In 1960, Nigeria gained full independence through a British Act of Parliament.[1]
