The Five Boroughs of New York City: 1: Manhattan 2: Brooklyn 3: Queens 4: Bronx 5: Staten Island

Description[edit | edit source]

New York City today is composed of five boroughs, which are coextensive with the five (counties) contained within the City: Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings), Manhattan (New York), Queens, and Staten Island (Richmond). Generally, boroughs refer to City government matters, while counties refer to matters of state government. When researching your ancestors, it will be very important to also follow the links to the individual borough/county pages, listed below, in addition to information on this page:

New York City Courthouses[edit | edit source]

The New York court system is a matter a state law. Consequently, New York City courts are organized by county. A legal matter in the Borough of Manhattan, for example, is held at a New York County court. Specific court information can be found on the respective county/borough pages.

New York City History[edit | edit source]

The first permanent European settlement was by the Dutch, who named the area Nieuw Amsterdam. The area was renamed New York when the British later acquired the city.

Boundary Changes[edit | edit source]

The definitive work on the many New York City boundary changes is:

It can also be ordered at any U.S. county library through Inter-Library Loan.

Census and Inhabitants Lists[edit | edit source]

A jury census was taken in 1816, 1819, and 1821 for the purpose of determining jury eligibility. This census covers Manhattan. Each ward has a census book and the census is arranged by address within the book. It includes the following information: name, age, occupation (head of household), number in household, race, and citizenship of the people in the household. This census is available at the New York City Municipal Archives. Their website includes an image of the 1819 Jury Census, Manhattan, Second Ward.

Episcopal[edit | edit source]

Trinity Episcopal Church Parish has a long and cherished history. The Church of England built its first parish church here in 1698. Chapels of ease were (with years constructed): St. George's Chapel (1750; became separate parish in 1811), St. Paul's Chapel (1764), St. John's Chapel (1803/1807; demolished 1918), Trinity Chapel (1851/1856), St. Chrysostom's Chapel (1868; demolished 1924), St. Cornelius the Centurion Chapel (1868), St. Augustine's Chapel (1876), St. Luke's Chapel (1822; became part of Trinity Parish in 1892), St. Agnes' Chapel (1892), and Church of the Intercession Chapel (1846; became part of Trinity Parish in 1907). Vestry minutes survive from 1697.[2]

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record published Trinity Parish's old parish registers. The old register books dated 1697 to 1748 are lost. A 1750 fire likely caused their destruction.[3]
