Elmhurst, Queens Borough, New York Genealogy
Newtown, originally Mespat or Maspeth also Maspeth Kills, was founded in 1642[1] in what was then the New Netherlands. The Rev. Francis Doughty was granted land at Mespat[2], comprising nearly all of the western half of Queens County[3], by Willem Kieft, the Dutch Governor. The original name was derived from the Indian name of Mespachtes by the Dutch[4]. This early settlement was attacked by the Siwanoy Indians lead by their Sachem Wampage. Anne Hutchins died in this attack[5]. The area is inhabited again by 1656[6].
Previously known as Newtown. First settled in 1652.[7]
