Historical Background[edit | edit source]

Civil Registration in Mauritius dates back to the 18th century. The Central Civil Status Office in Port Louis holds records as far back as 1812 and the older ones that are of interest to genealogists are kept at the National Archives in the DBM Complex, Industrial Zone, Coromandel.

Population coverage is estimated at 55%.[1]

The FamilySearch Library has filmed most of the pre-1930 civil registration records, including an index for the country and the civil registration records kept by the towns.
