Progress reports
- Funeral home records questionnaire
- Asking around, people said they only need to know years their records started and how to access them -- and any gaps
- Don't they care about what records they might have?
- Have a place that describes the typical records, so we don't have to have the detail on each funeral home.
- Specifically do we have to ask each one, or can we just say the records usually are these types.
- Often we just expect them to have info about the burial, but sometimes they have much more and we'd like the people to find out.
- Contact a few with extra questions to get a feel for what the others might have.
- Liz could not find anything that tells about the type of records they have. we surely need that in the Wiki so we can link to it.
- During the week it was suggested that the contact info should be to the area that deals with the records, if possible, rather than just the front office.
- Funeral homes that have gone out of business, where are those records?
- Do you have records from previous funeral homes. Do you know where earlier records might be?
- Last week many types of records were mentioned, and we should be sure that information is in the wiki -- but probably not on the questionnaire.
- We need a Wiki article that talks about the paper trail for funeral homes and for cemeteries
- We need someone to research this in the Wiki. We DO need to know where burial permits, for example, are kept and how they are accessed, whether in the archives, in funeral homes, or held by sextons.
- This includes all death-related records -- the paper trail: transportation records; embalming, care of body; another location for burial, esp if in different states; burial permits; purchasing gravesite - land record;
- Where are the records? Who has them, how do we access them, what years do they cover?
- Weakness: we talk about records, but not about why you want them, or the contents, how to use the records, how to analyze, even images of the records
- The beginner: they find one record about death and they found it all. Analyze, get more than just one.
- Pros and cons of asking too much, or too little. Let's let the people ask whatever they want, and gather whatever they want. Make a basic project for now, and more detail later. We may discover some record types that are unique to Utah or that have not been considered previously.
- Those who contact, if they have their cameras and request permission to take pictures. Copyright -- funeral home and family?
- Wiki page for each funeral home? If we find out they are quite similar, don't need a separate page -- unless they have something unusual.
- Asking around, people said they only need to know years their records started and how to access them -- and any gaps
- Neighboring counties
- Joy has started experimenting with the clickable maps. Her husband, Bo, has finished proofreading and updated links to be sure every neighboring county is listed.
- Results of poll re: order of records to suggest for finding birth information. James started the update to How to Find Birth Information in Utah.
- Start templates and task page for Births - Wilma made great progress
- Start on the State Archives project - Liz reworded info to experimental county, will do this for all counties.
- Utah Record Selection Table needs updating. (Just keeping on the list until done)
- Get documentation of Delayed Birth Registration - dates started, etc. (Says 1941 on state page, but no citation.) - Pat
- Do the county newspaper pages - wilma
