- Old account book entries, 1837-1841 : Decatur, Newton County, Mississippi This is a copy of a ledger from the first tavern in Decatur, Mississippi. From all accounts, the tavern belonged to James Ellis, a citizen of the area when the counties were formed in 1833. ... The ledger records Ellis's business transactions between 1837-1841. Mr. Ellis appears to have run a bar, boarding house, livery stable and a butcher shop ... The historical significance of the ledger is the names of the people who did business with James Ellis. They were the pioneer families that established Decautur, Newton County, Mississippi.
