Tithing and tax records (Zehnt- und Zinsbücher)[edit | edit source]
Research use: Provides information prior to parish registers. Shows names of heads of households or those who are of age. Sometimes several generations are shown or other relationships are given.
Record type: Lists of those paying tax and tithing assessments.
Time Period: 1200-present.
Content: Name of house or business owner, craftsmen, occupation, sometimes age or birth date, place of residence, description of property or status of membership or citizenship. Some are indexed by name, others by profession.
Location: Local city and state archives.
Population coverage: 10%.[1]
