Purpose

  • To gather information about state vital records departments for every state in the US. This information will be used to update the vital records Wiki pages in another project.

Spreadsheet

Instructions

Gathering Information

  • Using the link above, go to the spreadsheet. This is where you will record information about each state vital record's office.
  • We've provided a list of questions to help in gathering the information needed regarding the:
  • Laws for obtaining vital records
  • Dates the records were recorded by the county and the state.
  • Contact information for the vital records office
  • Source information for where the information was gathered
  • Other pertinent information

Where to get the other information

  • Use the information provided on the official state vital records pages first as the most correct information.
  • Use other sources to help gather information such as the Handybook and the Red Book. Note that there can be discrepancies in these books.
  • Refer to the old Vital Records pages. They may have the information you are looking for. Use the View History to get to the earlier versions of the page before they may have been changed by other contributors.

Additional Information

  • If you believe there is additional information that should be gathered regarding obtaining the records from the state/county, add that information to the spreadsheet.

Access to records

  • The databases have already been updated to the latest list. You will not need to review those databases.
  • Published material in book form and from the catalog have not been added to the online records at the tops of the pages, unless it has been published in a database. Another project will gather this information so we can properly display it on the Wiki page.

Vital Records Template Page

  • We really can't design the final version of the vital records pages until we gather more information for several states. After you have gathered information for 3 to 5 states, I think we'll have enough to make that final version. The goal is to update these pages as you finish a state.
