Task List[edit | edit source]
Instructions[edit | edit source]
There are several parts to this project. You may go through and update the sandbox by each step and record it on the Task List. Or you can complete a whole state at one time. This project must be completed in order. Do not skip ahead to another part of the project.
Part A - Update Headings[edit | edit source]
Step 1 - Remove Links found in Headings[edit | edit source]
- Go through sandbox page and remove any links that may be in a heading found on the Wiki page. Most of these links are for Wiki pages that will be linked to in another way.
Step 2 - Update Headings to Match the Page Layout[edit | edit source]
- Open this Wiki page: Native American State Pages Layout and compare the headings with the new layout.
- Make any changes by adding headings and deleting old headings. If the heading on the layout page says, optional, do not add it unless it is already on the Wiki page and has content under the heading.
- If there is content under the old heading, look to see where it can go. If it isn't evident, move the content and heading down to the bottom of the page. We will review it later.
- If a heading has is not on the page (and does not say Optional), still add it to the Wiki page in proper order.
Step 3 - Add "See...More..." Links to Specific Headings[edit | edit source]
- For each heading listed below, add the corresponding bullet with the link directly under the heading. It should be the first thing under the heading.
Agencies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs in STATE
*See Agencies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for more resources.
Reservations in STATE
*See Indigenous Peoples of the United States Reservations for more resources.
Indian Censuses
*See United States Special Inquiries Relating to Indians for more resources. *See American Indian Census Rolls for more resources.
STATE Indian School
*See Indigenous Peoples of the United States School Records for more resources.
Land Allotment Records
*See Allotment Records for Indigenous Peoples of the United States for more resources.
STATE Map of Indian Lands
*See Indigenous Peoples of the United States Maps for more resources.
- These "See more" links should be directly below the headings and before any other content under that heading.
Step 4 - Fix Headings[edit | edit source]
- On the headings that have STATE in it, replace it with the state name you are working on.
- Go to column D on the Task List and put the date and move to the next Part.
Part B - Online Resources Heading[edit | edit source]
Step 1 - Remove Button[edit | edit source]
- Remove the following wikitext from under the Online Resources Heading:
<div style="float:right">
<div id="fsButtons"><span class="online_records_button">Native American Online Genealogy Records</span></div></div>
Step 2 - Add "See..More"[edit | edit source]
- Add the following "See...More..." bullet directly below the Online Resources heading and before any other database links.
*See Native American Online Genealogy Records for more resources.
Step 3 - Double Check and Reformat Links[edit | edit source]
- All of these links should either be databases to specific records regarding tribes or research guides in this state. Remove any links to Tribal pages as these links should not be under Online Resources but instead under the headings below.
- Check each link to make sure it still works. If any are broken, use the Wayback Machine and Google to help you locate the new URL. If one cannot be found, put a note in Column K on the task list note about the link. (For now, leave the broken link on the sandbox page.)
- Reformat any database links or websites as necessary as stated in the Manual of Style.
- Go to column E on the Task List and put the date and move to the next Part.
Part C - Adding Content[edit | edit source]
Step 1 - Add Wikipedia Link[edit | edit source]
- Under the STATE Native Americans Historical Background heading, add a link to the Wikipedia page or other website about the tribe (if it exists). Use the wikitext below.
*[URL NAMEOFWIKIPEDIA PAGE] at Wikipedia
- On the Task list, go to the "List of Wikipedia Links" tab and find the corresponding tribe link in column A.
- If more than one link is listed in column B, review it to see if it can also add to the Wiki page.
- If no links are found on the task list, search the internet yourself to see if one could be located.
Step 2 - Add New Template to Agency Records Heading[edit | edit source]
- Under the heading, Agency Records, replace the old Agency Records template wikitext with the text listed below:
Agencies and subagencies were created as administrative offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its predecessors. Their purpose was (and is) to manage Indian affairs with the tribes, to enforce policies, and to assist in maintaining the peace. The local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs was charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility. The names and location of these agencies may have changed, but their purpose remained basically the same. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters. The BIA agency for STATE is the [URL NAMEOFOFFICE Office, BIA].<br> *Allotment records *Annuity rolls *Census records *Correspondence *Health records *Reports *School census and records *Vital records
- In the paragraph above replace the ALL CAPS text with the following:
- Go to column F on the Task List and put the date and move to the next Part.
Part D - Linking to Tribe Websites[edit | edit source]
For an current list of Federal and State Recognized Tribes, see List of federally recognized tribes by state and State-recognized tribes in the United States at Wikipedia
Step 1 - Add Links For Each Tribe[edit | edit source]
- Use this example below as a guideline for listing the tribes under the different headings at the top of the page:
- Example page: Alabama Indigenous Peoples
Tribes Recognized by the Federal Government[edit | edit source]
- Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation: Official Tribe Website; Research Wiki Article
- Mohegan Tribe: Official Tribe Website; Research Wiki Article
Tribes Recognized by the State of Connecticut[edit | edit source]
- Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation: Official Tribe Website
- The Golden Hill Paugussett: Facebook Page
- Schaghticoke Tribal Nation: Official Tribe Website
Tribes No Longer Active[edit | edit source]
- Abihka: Wikipedia Article
- Wiwohka: Access Genealogy
- Yuchi: History of Tribe; Research Wiki Article
Step 2 - Adding Bullet Lists[edit | edit source]
- For any headings with a large list of tribes and links listed, use the ul class to list out all of the tribes. You should use this only when there are 10 or more tribes in a list.
- To use this class, click "Edit source" next to the heading with the long list of tribes.
- Copy the following code and paste it immediately above the first tribe n the list.
- Immediately before the tribe name, add <li>.
- Immediately after that same tribe name, add </li>. See the example below.
- Note: remove any extra "<br>" instances at the end of the tribe name.
- On a line below the tribe listed last in the list, add the following code:
</ul> |}
- Click on "Show preview" to see if the coding is correct on the list.
- If the list looks like the spacing is correct, save the page and move on to the next part. If the tribe names are long and it is pushing content to the next line, try replacing "full" with "half" to determine which is the best way to display the tribe names. See image.
- Go to column F on the Task List and put the date and move to the next Part.
Part E - COMPLETED - Please skip to Part F[edit | edit source]
- Add National Archives DC information using the wikitext below:

- Make a note on column K on the Task List that there is content to review later.
- Go to column I on the Task List and put the date and move to the next Part.
Part G - SKIP THIS SECTION!! SAVE FOR ANOTHER PROJECT! Checking Links and Reformatting[edit | edit source]
- For any other links on the wiki page, check all the URL links on the page to make sure they work. If any are broken, use the Wayback Machine and Google to help you locate the new URL. If one cannot be found, put a note in Column K on the task list note about the link. (For now, leave the broken link on the sandbox page.)
- Use the Manual of Style to reformat the book citations listed on the Wiki page.
- Review the Repositories heading and update any previous information there. If you want you can find any additional repositories but it's not required. Use the Manual of Style under Repositories for guidance.
- Note: If the Wiki page includes reference to the large collection of volumes in Handbook of North American Indians, use the following wikitext code to replace what is currently on the page.
*Handbook of North American Indians, vols. 1-15, 17, by William C. Sturtevant. - When you have completed these tasks, preview the page to make sure it looks correct.
- Fix anything that does not look right. Once that is done, save the page and go back to the Task List and fill in the date under column J. Then go to the next state.
Part H - Add in Reference Heading and Reflist Template[edit | edit source]
- Review the bottom of the page and make sure the following wikitext is on the page AFTER the "For Further Reading" heading.
==References== reflist
- If the Wiki page already has a References heading, make sure you replace <references/> with the above reflist template.
