Archives and Libraries

• Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
• If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
• Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the FamilySearch Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

Territorial Archives of the United States Virgin Islands

The Territorial Archives are housed at the Enid M. Baa Library on St. Thomas and the Florence Williams Library on St. Croix under the government of the United States Virgin Islands, Department of Planning and Natural Resources, Division of Libraries, Archives & Museums.

Guide to United States Virgin Islands Records at the National Archives at New York City

This branch of the National Archives has records created by federal agencies and courts in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands. The archives has naturalization records, internal revenue service records, customs lists, and records of the United States District Court of Appeals. They also have microfilms of all available federal census records, many naturalization records, court records, passenger lists for New York City and other ports, Revolutionary War military records, some Civil War service indexes, and World War I draft registrations. The staff will make photocopies for a fee.
