Background
1664-1733 The French West India Company controlled Saint Croix.
1672 The Danish West India Guinea Company annexed the uninhabited island of Saint Thomas.
1718 The Danish West India Guinea Company annexed St. John.
1733 The Danish West India Guinea Company purchased Saint Croix from the French West India Company.
1754 The Danish company went bankrupt, and the King of Denmark–Norway assumed direct control of the three islands.
1754-1917 The islands belonged to Denmark.
1801–02 and 1807–15 Britain occupied the Danish West Indies, during the Napoleonic Wars.
1917 The United States bought the islands.
