History
The name "Symbirshafn" from 1161 is old Danish for "Simiris' harbor". The parish was formed when the city of Simrishamn was founded in the Middle Ages and remained it's own parish until 1578 when it became mother parish to nearby Järrestad pastorate. The parish name was also written as Sommarhauen, Symenshauen, Sommarshamn and Cimbritshamn. Simrishamn's church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, began as a fisherman's chapel sometime before the 1600s. The floor of the church is largely covered by tombstones.[1][2][3][4]
