- Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
- If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
- Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the Family History Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

- The sources for genealogical researches can be found in a large number of fonds and collections of the Croatian State Archives. The most significant and the most utilized sources on the topic are:

- Over 2,000 registers from the Collection of Registers of Births, Deaths and Marriages, ranging from 17th to 20th century.[1]
- Collection of Coat of Arms
- Collection of Copies of Coat of Arms
- Collection of Coat of Arms of the Families of Croatia and Slavonia
- Supplemented microfilms – registers of births, deaths and marriages
- The archives also collects data on registers of births, deaths and marriages in the territory of Croatia, so even if we do not hold material relevant for your research you can get general information about the registers of births deaths and marriages: where they are kept, whom to turn to etc.[2]

Regional State Archives
In addition to the Croatian State Archives, there is a network of regional state archives in the Republic of Croatia. The regional state archives contain records of regional administrative and judicial bodies, local schools, hospitals, factories, cultural associations, family and personal records and various other materials.
